Programs for Incarcerated Women Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Programs for Incarcerated Women - Research Paper Example Previously, women in prison were arrested and incarcerated for violent crimes such as murder, poisoning and arson, but the last few decades saw that a growing number of new female inmates were inside a prison for non-violent crimes, meaning these are crimes which are economic in nature. This is not a surprising fact, given that a lot of female inmates belong to racial and ethnic or other minorities such as those belonging to the lower socio-economic classes or being uneducated. The negative effect of incarcerated mothers gave rise to innovative ideas and approaches when it comes to dealing with children whose mothers are in prison. Special attention was paid to their daughters, and that is how the Girl Scouts of the USA came out with their ââ¬Å"Girl Scouts Beyond Barsâ⬠program which made a positive influence on people who would otherwise had lost hope. Keywords: daughters, drugs, economic, girl scouts, incarcerated, women in prison Introduction The issue of women in prison is a very sensitive topic for most people. Only lately has it caught the attention of policy makers, politicians and other interested parties because of the so-called women's movement, or feminism. The previous research on this subject was limited to the gender gap among highly visible political issues such as voting preferences between males and females, social equality discussions at the workplace, abortion rights and gender differences in attitudes towards crime and punishment. Some studies showed that most women, who feel that they are more vulnerable to crime due to their enhanced feelings of insecurity, usually favor a harsher and more severe punishment for convicted offenders to serve as deterrence. Female attitudes with regard to appropriate punishments include a longer prison sentence and capital punishment. The prevailing psychology in this regard is that punishment is used as deterrence for potential crime offenders and that the said punishment will somehow reduce crime in society. Women feel particularly vulnerable when it comes to certain crimes in which by their very nature, women are the predominant victims, such as domestic violence and rape. A general perception is that the two sexes have a different attitude towards crime and punishment, with women oriented to more ââ¬Å"ethic in careâ⬠while men prefer the ââ¬Å"ethic in equity of justiceâ⬠by which criminals must be punished immediately with enough severity, sometimes by applying death penalty. Only lately has the issue of women in prison been brought out into the open and included in the public discourse. The feminists have done quite a job in highlighting the problems of women in prison, including the racial and economic differences found to be inherent in the criminal justice system, and in particular, how female prisoners fare. This topic is the subject of this paper. Discussion The previous focus of the women's movement had been on the perceived vulnerability of women to cert ain crimes targeting them specifically. This feeling of fear and insecurity is of a great consequence in terms of their feeling and perception as potential victims. However, a new feminist focus today is one on the problem of women ending up in prisons and all the other issues related to female incarceration. The prior years had been focused on women as victims, but this new tack in public discourse has now shifted to women as

Virginia Woolf Essay Example for Free
Virginia Woolf Essay Virginia Woolf, and educated woman, described two luncheons at a male and female college. The intended audience of both passages is educated men who can make a change. Virginia Woolf demonstrates the differences in quality of education between men and women through narrative structure, selection of detail, and tone in order to garner support to change the quality of education for female students. The quality of food served at the menââ¬â¢s college reflects the quality of the education. For example, Woolf describes her experience of the luncheon at the menââ¬â¢s college through narrative structure, ââ¬Å"lunchâ⬠¦began with soles, sunk in a deep dishâ⬠(10-11). The moment the luncheon starts, Woolf is impressed with how much effort is put into the food. Describing how much effort people went through leaves the intended audience confident. Also the selection of detail in the passages supports the authors purpose by illustrating every food item, ââ¬Å"potatoes, thin as coinsâ⬠(18). The precision of the food item is mentioned through a simile to emphasize the importance of men in society. Enhancing the importance of men assists the author by proving how much people focus on what men want; putting all their energy to ensure that the education provided at the menââ¬â¢s college is exceptional quality. Woolfââ¬â¢s erudite tone towards the luncheon also reflects how impressed she was with the conversations surround her, ââ¬Å"brilliance, as it pops in and out upon our lipsâ⬠(29). The author supports her purpose through the erudite tone in order to present the intelligence surrounding her. The brilliant conversation Woolf hears at the luncheon is presented through personification, which represents the level of intelligence male students attending the college has from the quality of their education. Men will always have an advantage in society no matter if there is equality between men and women. Women earned equal rights as men, but there is a significant difference between the qualities of education, which Woolf explains through her experience at the womenââ¬â¢s college luncheon. Woolf describes her meal from the beginning as ââ¬Å"a plain gravy soupâ⬠(41-42) and ending with ââ¬Å"everybody scraped their chairs backâ⬠(62-63). Right from the start there is nothing special about the luncheon at the womenââ¬â¢s college. The whole lunch is characterized from the use of imagery to create the effect of the unmotivated students at the womenââ¬â¢s college, presenting to the audience that there is a clear difference in quality of education. The selection of detail adds emphasis on the simplicity of the meal, ââ¬Å"beef withâ⬠¦greens and potatoesâ⬠(45-46). There is nothing special about the meal, which also involves the length of the passage being concise, but still no one complains because it still is ââ¬Å"â⬠¦natureââ¬â¢s daily foodâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (50). This help the author to further prove people do not pay close attention to the quality of female education. In addition to selection of detail, the morose tone adds to the bland luncheon, that consisted of no conversation at all, ââ¬Å" That was all. The meal was overâ⬠(62-63). Woolf is simply pointing out the women who attend the college are not motivated. The quality of education the women are receiving may be adequate however; the education could become great if people paid more attention to it. Although women have equal rights as men, their quality in rights is not the same. Both the men and womenââ¬â¢s college provided an education, but there is a difference in the quality of education provided. The narrative style Woolf writes for the male college represents an elegant lifestyle, while the womenââ¬â¢s represents old fashion lifestyle, ââ¬Å"To call it puddingâ⬠¦would be an insultâ⬠(23-24), ââ¬Å"sproutsâ⬠¦ yellowed at the edgeâ⬠(47-48). The difference supports the authorââ¬â¢s purpose, emphasizing the contrast in foods as a metaphor for the difference in education. Men have always dominated society and sadly it is hard to have men and women become equal partners in society; leaving the intended audience aware of womenââ¬â¢s place in society through Woolfââ¬â¢s own awareness of the change. Describing the food in detail described the elaborate food provided for the men while the women had plain food ââ¬Å"the partridgesâ⬠¦came wit all their retinueâ⬠(16-17), ââ¬Å"prunes and custard followedâ⬠(52). The selection of detail indicates that people pay more attention to men than to women by giving men the best of the best and women what is considered as ordinary. The technique of personification describing the partridges creates a picture in the audienceââ¬â¢s mind on how grand the meal is by saying the food had an entourage. Lastly there is a shift in tone going from enlightening ââ¬Å"all are going to heavenâ⬠(33) to dreary ââ¬Å" soon the hall was emptiedâ⬠(63-64). The students at the male college are given plenty of support that they think they are the best; on the other hand the students at the womenââ¬â¢s college go on with their daily lives as individuals. After leaving the luncheon at the menââ¬â¢s college Woolf felt amazing which is the complete opposite of what she felt leaving the womenââ¬â¢s luncheon. Although the students at the womenââ¬â¢s college eat together, they eat and live as individuals rather than a community like the menââ¬â¢s c ollege. Although it may seem like men and women have equal rights, which is not the complete truth. Virginia Woolf uses her experience of two complete opposite luncheons at a male and female college to persuade the audience that there is no equality in the quality of education.

The Expatriates of the 1920s :: American America History
The Expatriates of the 1920's 1exâ⬠¢paâ⬠¢triâ⬠¢ate- 1: to withdraw (oneself) from residence in or allegiance to one's native country 2: intransitive senses: to leave one's native country to live elsewhere; also: to renounce allegiance to one's native country Merriam-Webster Dictionary Nothing before, or since has equaled the mass expatriation of the 1920's. It was as if a great draft of wind picked up these very peculiar people and dropped them off in a European life style. Europe and the rest of the world were beginning to see a large population of these American expatriates. "... the younger and footloose intellectuals went streaming up the longest gangplank in the world." (Cowley 79) Along with the intellectuals went the wealthy à ©lite, the recent college graduates, the art students, and the recent war veterans aptly called "The Lost Generation". Although many went all over the world, the largest density of these expatriates was in France. "Indeed, to young writers like ourselves, a long sojourn in France was almost a pilgrimage to the Holy Land." (Cowley 102) Many expatriates flocked to Paris to follow forerunners in the movement such as Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein. Most of the expatriates wished to have an introduction to Gertrude Stein at her apartment. There they would discuss art, literature, and the ideals of America for hours on end. Gertrude Stein characterized the expatriates' view of America when she said, "America is my country, and Paris is my home town". (Stein) This idea, of having a place that you consider your home, but not your homeland, is the basis of the expatriate movement. The writing of this era was influenced by a few things. With the new ideas of America, there also came much criticism of it to. After World War One, many Americans became somewhat dissatisfied with the way that their own country's people and leaders acted. This was also a catalyst in the massive expatriation that occurred. Also, it is speculated that many war veterans could have developed various and unknown disorders caused by the type of warfare in which they had taken part. The optimistic culture of The Roaring Twenties also could have been a factor in the attitudes towards America and the writing that developed from it. Through a close study of the Expatriates, I will propose this list of probable influences towards the attitudes and writing that occurred. 1.) World War One, and the physical affects that it created among American and European Citizens.

Task Switching
Running Head: Time Cost, Task-Switching, Repeating Tasks Task Switching Costââ¬â¢s Time Brooklyn College City University of New York Abstract A replication of Task Switching Monsell 2003 experiment was done, which predicts a time cost when switching tasks. 18 participants had to complete 100 randomized trials, switching between task-repeat and task-switching trials. Reaction Times (RT) were recorded and reflected by experimenters, to determine that there is a time cost involved when switching tasks as opposed to repeating the same task. Task-Switching Costs TimeMany people take pride in the fact that they can multitask. A study ââ¬Å"Task Switchingâ⬠conducted by Monsell concluded that multitasking, or switching between tasks actually costs us time. Our brain is complicated machinery, which requires a specific program for a specific task to be loaded in to our computer, the brain, to complete a task. Switching between tasks takes more time than repeating the same task. Monse ll demonstrated that when presented with one task, our brain responds faster in completing the task, rather than switching between tasks. In a task-switching experiment subjects are first pretrained on two or more simple tasks afforded by a set of stimuli. Each task requires attention to, and classification of, a different element or attribute of the stimulus or retrieval from memory or computation of a different property of the stimulus. (eg. , Monsell 2003) In the study the subjects were presented with a series of trials (eg. , Monsell 2003) and completed the task at hand on a random trial basis. The participants had to repeat the same task or switch between tasks to complete each trial.By conducting these trials the researchers tried to examine performance or brain activation on and following trials when the task changes for evidence of extra processing demands that are associated with the need to reconfigure task-set (eg. , Monsell 2003) The study concluded our brain requires a à ¢â¬Å"task-set reconfigurationâ⬠a sort of mental ââ¬Å"gear changingâ⬠(eg. , Monsell 2003) In prospective this means that our brain loads a different program every time we need to complete a separate task. When switching between tasks our brain goes between two different programs one for example for counting and one for reading, therefore costing us time to switch between these two tasks. In this experiment we tried to replicate the Monsell 2003 Task Switching experiment. 18 Participants took a brief task-switching test via program Revolution Makerà ©. Each trial was randomly assigned. The participants were presented with numbers one through nine and on each trial had to react to the number, to identify either its odd or even or if the magnitude was either less than 5 or more than 5.We hypothesis that when individuals are engaged in a cognitive task there is a time cost that occurs when asked to switch between tasks as opposed to repeating tasks. Methods Participants: 1 8 undergraduate students from Brooklyn College participated in this study. Materials: A task switching experiment designed on the computer program Revolution Makerà © Procedure: Participants were led to an isolated lab room were they participated in a task-switching experiment. They were involved in 2 tasks a magnitude test and an odd even task. There was 100 randomly assigned trials 50% task-switch and 50% task-repeat that were completed by the participants. There were different type keys presented to the participants such as: z for an odd number, x for an even number, m for a number (>) than 5, and n for a number (

Insanity Defense: Why Should It Essay
Abstract The author of this paper argues several reasons why the insanity plea should be changed or either eliminated. The reasons are considered and supported by evidence. The conclusion states that insanity should be altered or eliminated for the safety and well being of society. Insanity Defense: Why Should It Be Abolished Or Altered Introduction The insanity defense asserts that the criminal defendant is not guilty by reason of insanity. This theory should be abolished or altered. The proposal behind the defense is people who are insane cannot have the knowledge required to perform a criminal act because they either do not know that act is wrong or cannot control their actions even when they understand the act is wrong, but this theory is controversial because insanity is difficult to define, and the circumstances in which insanity can be used to excuse criminal responsibility are difficult to define. History And Background The theory of the insanity defense has been around since ancient Greece and Rome. The theory was put in to use by Edward II. Under the English common law, a person was declared insane if their mental capacity was no more than a so-called ââ¬Å"wild beastâ⬠. The first insanity trials began in 1724, those whoà were insane and under the age of 14 were found not guilty in the court of law. (Wiki 2011) This eventually led to any criminal or defendant being able to use the plea to excuse the act that had been committed. Though the act was in place it wasnââ¬â¢t upheld in court and wasnââ¬â¢t problem at the time. In 1986 (Ford v. Wainwright) the US Supreme court upheld the common law that the insane cannot be executed. It also stated that a person under the death penalty is to be given a competency evaluation and a hearing in court on his or her chances to be executed. In Wainwright v. Greenfield the prosecutor can argue that a personââ¬â¢s silence during the readingââ¬â ¢s of their Miranda rights is evidence of insanity. (Wiki 2011) The court gives jurisdiction for insanity in different rules or a combination of them. The ââ¬Å"Mââ¬â¢Nagthen ruleâ⬠is where the defendant either did not understand what he or she did or failed to distinguish right from wrong, because the disease of the mind. The ââ¬Å"Irresistible Impulseâ⬠test as a result of mental disease, defendant was unable to control his impulses, which led to the crime committed. The ââ¬Å"Durham Ruleâ⬠regardless of any diagnosis, defendantââ¬â¢s mental defect resulted in the criminal act. Finally the ââ¬Å"Model Penal Codeâ⬠due to the diagnosed mentally ill defendant either failed to understand the crime of his or her acts or was unable to act within the confines of the law. (Lally 1997)) The defense declares that a criminal defendant should not be guilty because the defendant is insane. Whens someone commits a crime in todayââ¬â¢s society he or she may use mental illness as a defense, know as insanity plea or insanity defense (Dubsinki 1986). What the insanity defense does is try to give the criminal a so-called fair trial. Even if the crime committed is very extreme and seems to be unruly. The problem arises where do we draw the line for these criminals. What principle is a person considered insane and how is the tested? Insanity defense has been a problem in recent years, and that all criminals have some sort of mental illness. The crime itself no matter how extreme questions the fact if it demonstrates insanity. It has been a major ordeal in our legal system today. If the criminals are considered insane and out of touch with reality, the justice system agrees to pass the trial and the criminals are entered into a mental hospital. (Carpenter 2011) Criminals are then found not guilty by reason of insanity. The Problem For instance, the problem with insanity defense is legal analysts examine each client or criminal from a legal angle, also conversing to different doctors as well as specialists. Each client has to undergo tests. They do not actually come up with scientific prove from the brain to say the person is either mentally ill or not. (Khan 2014) This is the hardest part of the insanity defense, determining whether or not that person is mentally insane or acting like it. How can a person who kills twelve people including women and children be allowed to live in mental hospital while the victimââ¬â¢s families suffer from the loss of their loved ones. Forensic psychiatrist Jonas Rappeport saw such pleas during his quarter century as chief medical officer of Baltimoreââ¬â¢s Circuit Court said, ââ¬Å"When youââ¬â¢ve got no better defense, thatââ¬â¢s the way to go.â⬠(White 2011) The fact is sometimes these criminals are using the insanity defense to avoid the death penalty and continuing to live life in prison or mental hospitals, and under some circumstances are released from the mental hospitals affirming the patients have been cured (Khan 2014). Any defendant can use the defense. Lorena Bobbitt argued she was temporarily insane when she severed her husbandââ¬â¢s penis with a kitchen knife four years ago. She was released after three months of psychiatric evaluation. (Carpenter 2011) Crimes happen everyday, some crimes are inexcusable and those who commit them should be punished. The punishment should fit the crime if we do something that is equally as extreme as take a life from another person, we should not be allowed to defend ourselves by insanity. Murder should go charged which is why the insanity plea should be altered or erased. It allows the criminals to go unpunished for their crime. Rebuttal There are however many criminals who do have some type of mental illness, but still are not eligible for the insanity plea. As shown in a recent survey of prison populations there are higher rates of mental illness and substance abuse among inmates than the general population. (Lally1997) The determining of insanity is very difficult and can inaccurate. If the person is clinically insane what principles do we use to penalize the individual for the crimes they committed? If he or she does not know right from wrong and if the person is out of touch with reality, under what circumstances is the plea suitable for the crime committed? An example would be if shoplifter wasà charged for his or her crime and uses the insanity plea as a defense saying they werenââ¬â¢t in touch with reality, we would give that person a reduced sentence. If the person confirms to be insane they need to receive help, if we decided to put that person into a prison it would not help them what so ever. The insanity plea is a very controversial topic many people think it should be erased others think it should be altered. The difficulty of changing the plea is because of the determining if one is sane of not and under what right to do we have to choose the faith of another person. Resolution Accordingly resolution is the insanity plea should be erased or abolished because itââ¬â¢s a threat to the American people. Considering a large number of Americans feel the insanity plea should be erased or even altered to protect peopleââ¬â¢s own safety. (Dubsinki 1986) Using the insanity plea in a murder case and getting away with disproves the American people. Imagine the reaction people would feel if a murderer who just recently left the mental institution after pleading mentally insane were walking shoulder to shoulder to them. Insanity should not be used as a so-called excuse to avoid the punishment of the crime someone has committed. They should be punished for their actions they ch oose to do and neither the justice or court system should have a say in that. Even though the difficulty to prove sanity is questionable, the person should go through a broader series of tests and have evidence compelling towards insanity. (Harris 2013) If this person is sent to a mental hospital and then is considered cured or not a threat, he or she free to go which is wrong and corrupt. We should have firm standard for judging whether a person is mentally ill or not. Conclusion Thus, the plea should be altered or even erased in some circumstances. Even though some of crimes committed would result in a death penalty for those who murder and kill for no reason. If that person is insane, the punishments should fit the crime they have committed. If they are unaware of what they were doing and the result is being found not guilty, who is to say that they will not commit another crime again. Murder should be punished with death in my opinion and the crime should fit the punishment and there should be no alibi in the court system. If we let these people continue t o use this excuse eventually our jails and mental will be full and the government will be spending even moreà money. (Harris 2013) Taking these so called mentally insane people off the streets will give America a safer conscious. References, Dubsinki, K. D. (1986, July 15). Insanity Defense. In Chicago Tribute. Falkland Wars essays
Falkland Wars essays The history of the islands of the Falklands dates back to 500 years from today. The island has been a matter of utmost controversy, especially in the 18th century. Many nations have claimed their right to the island including the British, Argentines, French as well as the Spaniards. The Falkland Islands are located in the South of the Atlantic Ocean, more than two hundred and ninety miles east from the coast of the South American mainland[1]. The European nations which have been at constant wars at sea have been in a continuous conflict over the authority of different colonies or islands. This has been a routine since a number of years. However, due to the existence of numerous powers in the time, treaties were normally signed in order to settle disputes or conflicts. These treaties were clearly defined and they either transferred the ownership of the land back to the previous owner or transferred to the conquering nation. It majorly depended on the power of the nations at that particular time. The history of the Falkland Islands has been somewhat similar to this. John Davis, a British explorer has been known to be the 1st to set sail towards the islands. However, he initially set out to name some other land in the name of the British. On his way through, he sighted the Falkland Islands in 1592[2]. However, John Strong landed on the islands in 1690 and named the islands in the name of the treasurer of the navy at the time, Viscount Falkland. Strong sailed on after exploring the island. However, the history of the island has been known to remain vacant after that until the French set sail over them. The French initially discovered a colony in the East of the Falkland, at Port Louis in 1764[3]. The same year, the British explorer by the name of John Byron managed to establish a castle at the north of the West of the Falkland. This is when Byron claimed the island in the name of the Bri...

Degrees of Freedom in Statistics and Mathematics
Degrees of Freedom in Statistics and Mathematics In statistics, the degrees of freedom are used to define the number of independent quantities that can be assigned to a statistical distribution. This number typically refers to a positive whole number that indicates the lack of restrictions on a persons ability to calculate missing factors from statistical problems. Degrees of freedom act as variables in the final calculation of a statistic and are used to determine the outcome of different scenarios in a system, and in math degrees of freedom define the number of dimensions in a domain that is needed to determine the full vector. To illustrate the concept of a degree of freedom, we will look at a basic calculation concerning the sample mean, and to find the mean of a list of data, we add all of the data and divide by the total number of values. An Illustration with a Sample Mean For a moment suppose that we know the mean of a data set is 25 and that the values in this set are 20, 10, 50, and one unknown number. The formula for a sample mean gives us the equation (20 10 50 x)/4 25, where x denotes the unknown, using some basic algebra, one can then determine that the missing number,à x, is equal to 20. Lets alter this scenario slightly. Again we suppose that we know the mean of a data set is 25. However, this time the values in the data set are 20, 10, and two unknown values. These unknowns could be different, so we use two different variables, x, and y,à to denote this. The resulting equation is (20 10 x y)/4 25. With some algebra, we obtain y 70- x. The formula is written in this form to show that once we choose a value for x, the value for y is completely determined. We have one choice to make, and this shows that there is one degree of freedom. Now well look at a sample size of one hundred. If we know that the mean of this sample data is 20, but do not know the values of any of the data, then there are 99 degrees of freedom. All values must add up to a total of 20 x 100 2000. Once we have the values of 99 elements in the data set, then the last one has been determined. Student t-score and Chi-Square Distribution Degrees of freedom play an important role when using the Student t-score table. There are actually several t-score distributions. We differentiate between these distributions by use of degrees of freedom. Here the probability distribution that we use depends upon the size of our sample. If our sample size is n, then the number of degrees of freedom is n-1. For instance, a sample size of 22 would require us to use the row of the t-score table with 21 degrees of freedom. The use of a chi-square distribution also requires the use of degrees of freedom. Here, in an identical manner as with the t-scoreà distribution, the sample size determines which distribution to use. If the sample size is n, then there are n-1 degrees of freedom. Standard Deviation and Advanced Techniques Another place where degrees of freedom show up is in the formula for the standard deviation. This occurrence is not as overt, but we can see it if we know where to look. To find a standard deviation we are looking for the average deviation from the mean. However, after subtracting the mean from each data value and squaring the differences, we end up dividing by n-1 rather than n as we might expect. The presence of the n-1 comes from the number of degrees of freedom. Since the n data values and the sample mean are being used in the formula, there are n-1 degrees of freedom. More advanced statistical techniques use more complicated ways of counting the degrees of freedom. When calculating the test statistic for two means with independent samples of n1 and n2 elements, the number of degrees of freedom has quite a complicated formula. It can be estimated by using the smaller of n1-1 and n2-1 Another example of a different way to count the degrees of freedom comes with an F test. In conducting an F test we have k samples each of size n- the degrees of freedom in the numerator is k-1 and in the denominator is k(n-1).

During this "rebound" period, confusion, hyper arousal, suspiciousness, and other components of paranoid thinking may also appear (Streufert, 1993).Under the best possible natural circumstances, people report that cocaine elevates their capacity to focus, increments sexual energy, expands their amiability and reductions any previous tim idity, strain, weariness, dejection, or fatigue. Numerous individuals feel chattier, more strongly included in their connections with others, and perkier and unconstrained when high on cocaine. Down from their cocaine high, a few users experience brief unpalatable responses and delayed consequences, which may incorporate eagerness, tension, unsettling, touchiness, and sleep deprivation. Amid this period, suspiciousness, perplexity, hyper arousal, and different components of paranoid deduction might likewise show up.

Child care - Essay Example The Australian governments has taken several measures such as child care benefit determination 2000, GST free supply determination 2002, family assistance determination 2003, to ensure that children receive best attention and to improve child care facilities. Child care centers provide services throughout standard hours, weekends, overnight, school holidays, before and after school working hours etc. For working parents, it is a safe place to entrust their children to the care of the qualified child care workers. Generally, they follow a policy of strict confidentiality and do not reveal any information related to children and parents to outsiders. When the children are enrolled, an agreement is signed between parents and the childcare centers. First of all, the child care centre agrees to provide a secure, homely environment to all children. There wonââ¬â¢t be any discrimination between children based on caste, religion, color, and financial status. Moreover, they provide a conducive atmosphere for the mental and physical development of children. They also promise to inculcate good qualities in the child through moral education. In return for all these services, the parents agree to provide a certain amount as fees. There is an effec tive mechanism in place in order to deal with complaints from the parents as well as the children. All the grievances of parents and children are immediately looked into and according to the specific nature of the complaints, actions are recommended. As the child care centers have several qualified trained personnel, they can bring up children in a secure, family focused environment. The children in child care centre learn through play and examination. Sometimes, unqualified child worker may look after children in a child care centre, childââ¬â¢s home, or at carerââ¬â¢s home. They also work in hospitals, womenââ¬â¢s shelters and some

Dental insurance - Article Example The core issue discussed relies on the information gathered with reference to the level in which the respondents accept or reject the of the thirty Current dental terminology codes (CDT) (Stafford et.al, 2010). Scholarly research insisted that among all the adults, the privately insured were more likely to have treated carries. This is contrary with reference to the case of the uninsured. Statistically, scholarly information indicates that 68.5% of private insurance and 56.9% had dental insurance. According to the study, above 80 % dental exams acceptance rate was recorded, inclusive of the insured and uninsured. First, the exams taken orally were highly rejected. The results of the study depict that most of the insured persons indicated a high rate of acceptance toward oral prophylaxis procedure (Stafford et.al, 2010). On the other side, the uninsured show less acceptance rate towards treatments. Statistically, the insured show 90% acceptance, against the 74.6 acceptance rate. Overall statistics gathered from the study indicate that 72% of all the patients accepted the treatments. Specifically, 75% of the insured persons accepted treatment. Alternatively, 68% of the uninsured rejected it (Stafford et.al, 2010). However, the results dictate that there is an affirmative correlation between the independent and dependent variable. Ideally, the independent variable is the status of insurance, and the dependent variable is the dental treatment. Stafford,à W.à L., Edenfield,à S.à M., Coulton,à K.à M., & Beiter,à T. (2010). Report - Essay Example According to the Oxy Chemical case, the message is important to top management cadre, employees, and also the public in general. The integration of drug test policy in the organization will help the organization achieve its desired goals and objectives without any setbacks resulting from employee health and safety within the workplace. Drug use and abuse of substance has a negative effect on employeesââ¬â¢ performance. As a result, it is imperative for the organization to carry out various intervention strategies and procedures that will curb the problem. According to President Morgan, employeesââ¬â¢ drug test in the organization will have a positive impact on employeesââ¬â¢ production capacity and promote corporate social responsibility. Morgan argued that alienation of workers from the organization does not solve the entire issue of drug use and substance. Therefore, initiating a procedure through which employees undertake drug testing will help the society, resulting into a positive corporate image (USDL 3). Drug use and abuse of substance can only be mitigated through correction and improvement procedures among employees in order to increase production capacity. Drug testing regulations and laws vary from one country to the other. The implementation of drug testing policies among employees is necessary in some large organizations that have high sensitive jobs. Some governments may prohibit or allow drug test policies for employees in the workplace. For instance, Indian does not have a particular law that prohibits or encourage employees to carry out drug testing. Therefore, the organization is left with the sole responsibility to determine whether to perform drug testing. The Oxy Chemical plant President proposed drug testing among employees aimed at rectifying and improving health standards within the workplace.

To achieve this mission, the organization runs several programs related directly or indirectly to education. According to AERA (2012), the key programs that this organization runs are educational research and policy, government relations, social justice, professional development and communication and outreach. All these programs help in one way or the other in the improvement of education in the country. Although the organization has so far done a recommendable job in terms of education improvements, it still has a room for more and better contributions in education. This organization can only achieve this through introduction of more key educational and instructional programs that can improve education. One of such program the organization can adapt is ââ¬ËTraining the Trainersââ¬â¢. This program, as the name suggests, would involve training the personnel who take part in education of both students and teachers profession. In this program, the trainers will be trained on research practice and ethics required in undertaking an education research. The main objective of this program would be to equip teachers and educators with skills and information that can enable them to conduct research on their students successfully. The program would also give the teachers and educator the skills and information on how to use the findings of a research to improve education without violating individualââ¬â¢s rights. According to Kuhet al (2010), this would enable the teachers and educators in selecting effective education practice that would promote education in the whole country. Although NIMBY remained in Santa Ana, the targeted warehouse had a capacity of 200 beds. The opposition was mostly due to lack of consultation from the neighbors resulting to undermined civil rights, and distraction from the homeless people including breaking into laundry rooms, leaving needles and feces behind, and taking showers using hosepipes. Despite the validity of these arguments, no supervisor attended. With SB2 in place, the residents of Santa Ana have a tough journey ahead since the council has no authority to stop the shelter in a city-approved zone. Immigration and Asylum Law Master Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Immigration and Asylum Law Master - Essay Example As with all statutes, the process of refinement and adjustment is continuous the most recent of which is the Immigration and Asylum (Treatment of Claimants) Act 2004. Claiming as a victim of persecution as a result of fighting for the rights of a tribe belonging to northern Uganda, Frank (rather an odd name for an Ugandan) is now battling for asylum in the United Kingdom. His case, however, is complicated with the fact that he has HIV, entered the United Kingdom thru Belgium and that he has relatives (a sister and a brother) already residing in the UK. According to the 1951 United Nations Convention on Refugees to which the UK is a signatory, an asylum-seeker is someone of any age who has fled his or her home country to find a safe place elsewhere. Anyone with the claim of persecution is entitled to seek an asylum but the contention is that the applicant must be able to demonstrate a well-founded fear of persecution in their country of origin for reasons of political opinion, religion, ethnicity, race/ nationality, or membership of a particular social group and that he is unable to obtain any protection or assistance from their own national autho rities. Since April 2003, a person who does not qualify for refugee status may instead be appeal under Humanitarian Protection grounds. This criterion is a leave to remain granted to a person who would, if removed, face in the country of return a serious risk to life or person arising from a death penalty, unlawful killing, or torture or inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. This is to comply with Article 2 or the right to life and Article 3 or the 1950 European Convention on Human Rights, especially Article 2, the right to life and Article 3, the prohibition on torture and inhuman or degrading treatment and is codified in the 1998 Human Rights Act. The burden of evidence still lies in the asylum seeker unless there is obvious and publicized threat to the person. After the 30th of August 2005 amendment to the Immigration and Asylum act, the permission for people to stay due to Humanitarian Protection grounds have been extended for 5 years instead of the previous 3 years leave. However, during this period the leave is subject to review and if ever it was found that the asylum seeker purposely deceived the Home Office (the agency dedicated to these issues) and that the persecution did not exist, the leave is revoked. Leaves may also be subject to review because the genuine persecution no longer exists. If Frank does not succeed in pursuing asylum due to persecution, he may resort to family reunion reasons especially that he already has siblings in the United Kingdom. However, the statures existing in the UK provides no automatic right to family reunion until a person has refugee status. Only under compelling compassionate circumstances other than refugee status will applications be considered such as the imminent death of a lone parent working in the UK. Only the immediate family ( spouse and dependent children under the age of 18) can apply for entry clearance to join their spouse/parent in the UK once the refugee status has been granted. Certain documents will be needed such as Birth and Marriage certificates. If this unavailable or is deemed questionable, a DNA test could be conducted with the discretion of the

The Movers of the World and Their Importance to Society Essay Example for Free
The Movers of the World and Their Importance to Society Essay A person with an AK -47 automatic assault rifle steps in the local mall and shoots all the employees and kills them. The owner comes in and realizes that the most important part of his company is no longer around to sell and take orders to help it keep it running. So just like a company without people to help run it, a company without a person with the knowledge of computer information science isnââ¬â¢t going to get far .Well, not as quickly as everyone else in receiving and issuing out information. Obtaining a degree in computer information science will give me an opportunity to join a lot of jobs from different type of companies. It will give me the understanding of the communication system networking in business .I will get a broad view of what type work settings I will be working in with a degree in computer information science. Also I will get a quick view of what formed computer information science and will I make enough money to take a cruise thru the Bahamas every year. An individual with a degree in computer science will be solving problems, creating new technologies, and carrying out research. They will also come up with new ways to apply a new idea that is dealing with computer use and expound them to others. Companies now and days are turning to computers because it is a quicker way to communicate with mass people, other businesses and send and receive information. Having the knowledge of computer science is another way to keep up with daily, monthly and yearly activities. In order for a company to keep up with the business world of today they must have someone who has gumption of computer operations. I chose computer science because there are lots of positions that I can get from that degree. Although there are different concentrations in that degree I still have plenty of options to choose from with a concentration in networking. Networking gives me the options of choosing different job titles. I could go for system analysts because systems analysts are the main individualââ¬â¢s in the success of any company. They create new systems while dealing with existing capabilities of technology that is avail. I could be a database administrator, processing all the company data since all companies have information that they want to keep up with. Any concentration of computer science will allow the holder to build any organization networking for the users can be able to get information from outside networks such as email communications. Computer scientist can also be working to have inside company network communications running mellifluous. Another reason I chose this job is because the work environment will be relaxing and with flexibility. Computer systems analysts, database administrators, and computer scientists generally work in pleasant work environments such as research laboratories or offices. Given the advanced technology options available to many businesses and professionals it is also possible to telecommute. Networks evolve and expand people can work from home and other non-office locations (Guide to college majors in computers science, 1999). Like I said before there are many titles for computer information science in a variety of jobs if not 90% of jobs and the salary varies. An systems analysts can earn from $73,000 on up. Data administrators can earn up to $68,000.If one want to further their career and get a master ââ¬Ës in computer information science then they can earn a salary of $97,000 to $121,000 yearly. While it is possible to find jobs as researchers or adjuncts with only a masters degree, a doctorate in computer science is usually the least needed for careers in academia and research (Paley, 1999). I consider all them good paying prospects. All companies deal with numbers in the sense of mathematics. Have been birth from the mathematics department, itââ¬â¢s best to know its characteristics and be grounded with them. The main characteristics are calculus, algebra, physics and chemistry (Paley, 1999). Math is the foundation and employers are looking for the that type of potential to keep the company moving toward the future. Technology is advancing and being created everyday and that is creating positions in companies.Jobs have different names for the same job field and obtaining a higher degree in your field can move you up in the company. You can start as a database entry -level worker and move up to a data administrator. Certification is essentially a standard process in the industry (Computer science, technology and database administration careers and jobs 2012). That is the main reason employers are looking for people with degrees or certifications stating computer information science. Businesses flourish with the knowledge of computer information science. Living in todayââ¬â¢s world people are impatient with questions and are quickly coming up with ideas. People want a quick way to solve these problems and distribute them fast. Computers are a way to satisfy that need and companies are in competition in recruiting people who have the networking skills with computers. One will need that skill to keep the company interacting with people inside and outside the company in a quick way. Having the mathematical mind will help solve problems that will give a person the one up on the next person in job searching. Having a computer information science degree will give one the opportunity to work from the comfort of their home to a nice office setting with the ability to maneuver around personal living. On top of that, you will be earning that salary to take that trip to the Bahamas every year. References Guide to college majors in computers science. (1999). Advancement of Medical Procedures from the Civil War
Advancement of Medical Procedures from the Civil War Abstract The question being answered through a wide range of sources is, to what extent did the Civil War deaths caused by surgeries and infections advance evolution in the medical field for future generations? A large variety of medical procedures that exist today seem to be newly introduced to the world of dedicated studies to medicine when in reality those same practices have existed previously and simply have taken on more efficient forms than its predecessors. These methods evolved through the concept of rising demands in the community and urge to be able to provide the most efficient and sanitary idea of completing procedures such as surgeries and amputations. This method and concepts were first introduced in the Civil War where firing weapons had become of mass use to the soldiers in the north and south of the country. These weapons caused tremendous number of injuries, most fatal or life threatening. The only way to save those on the edge of death was risking the introduction of surgi cal methods/opportunities of limb amputation. This idea seemed farfetched at the time of existence but there soldiers had no other option as it was a matter of life or death. This essay touches base on many of these procedures and puts into perspective just how dangerous they were even when trying to save the lives of so many victims. Not only were these methods used in the past but they still are to this day in much more advanced forms having evolved to become more prevalent to victims with all forms of injuries, providing the greatest benefits to them. Over time there have been changes in these procedures thanks to the growing knowledge in the medical field brought upon by these early surgeons who sparked the advancement of medical methods of practice. Introduction Today there exists medical procedures that may have seemed impossible to achieve and yet have been created and are being used effectively. These, of course, did not appear spontaneously. Over the course of the decades, the demand for more efficient medical procedures and tools grew as deaths caused by the inefficiency were far too high. Various events and situations influenced these advancements that shaped the future to be far superior. The only question left to be answered is to what extent did the Civil War deaths caused by surgeries and infections advance evolution in the medical field for future generations? From the stench of dead tissue drifting through the unsanitary, swarmed camps to the unglamorous sicknesses of syphilis and diarrhea, our current views towards Civil War therapeutic practices is greatly supported. While progressed or sterile may not be terms describing pharmaceutical practices in the nineteenth century, current healing center practices and treatment techniques owe much to the legacy of Civil War medication. Of the estimated 620,000 warriors who passed on in the war, 66% of these passings were not the aftermath of the actual gunfire , but rather of a injuries that the gunshots inflicted which werent always lethal. Treating the armies of injured officers pushed Americans to reexamine their speculations on wellbeing and create effective practices to tend to those debilitated and injured. Toward the start of the Civil War, medical equipment and learning was barely up to par with the difficulties postured by the injuries, contaminations and ailments which tormented thousa nds of soldiers on both sides. Diseases like diarrhea, typhoid fever, pneumonia, mumps, measles and tuberculosis spread among the inadequately sterilized camps, were brought on effectively and were debilitated by the injuries and diets. Furthermore, armed forces at first attempted to productively tend to and transport their injured, accidentally giving up more lives to insignificant disruption. For therapeutic specialists in the field during the Civil War, sterile (clean) medicinal practices, proper equipment, and composed hospitalization frameworks were essentially obscure. Medical preparation was barely developing out of the chivalrous time, a period where doctors upheld phlebotomy, cleansing, rankling (or a mix of every one of the three) to rebalance the humors of the body and cure the debilitated. Doctors were additionally regularly urged to treat illnesses like syphilis with mercury, a harmful treatment, no doubt. These forceful cures of the chivalrous time were regularly more awful than patients illnesses themselves; the individuals who defeated disease after the war owed their recuperations to the creativity of contemporary pharmaceuticals than to coarseness and possibility. Fortune was an irregularity in camps where poor sanitation, awful cleanliness and eating regimen reared illness, disease, and passing. Where? The South was the side of the nation most influenced where vast majority of the Civil War battles were fought. The country was a fiasco after the war was thought to be over. It became known as the war where a nation turned on itself. Subjection, states rights, sparing issues and numerous different reasons prompted the grisly war. The North consisted of the countrys industrialized businesses, such as factories with production lines, shops, and so forth. While the opposing South consisted of a horticulture based economy. The South, comprised of many slaves, made greater parts of the agriculture in the entire nation. A large portion of the North was against slavery which was a primary reason the Civil War occurred. Every side needed to developed improvements in hopes of being triumphant, yet both sides additionally knew there would only be one winning side. Evidence shows that one of the reasons of war starting was the race of President Abraham Lincoln. Both the North and South realized that with this race the North would have an upper edge politically in winning this war. In spite the reality of what appeared to be a straightforward contradiction, the war was and will dependably be one of the bloodiest in the historical downfall of the United States yielding a mind-boggling number of around six hundred twenty thousand losses bringing our country to where it stands today (Civil War Medicine, n.d.). Many inquiries are left unanswered like, How might our U.S. look today if the South had won this war? or Would servitude and slavery still exist today? and various others which will remain dependably open without answers since there is nothing available to come to a conclusion. The concentration of this paper is to what extent did the Civil War deaths caused by surgeries and infections advance evolution in the medical field for future generations? It wasnt the bullets themselves In present day times its believed that the worst part of the war were the violent fights in which more lives were lost from injuries, contaminations, and numerous infections rather than the ammunition itself. Despite the fact that the aggregate number of passings from both sides joined was about six hundred and twenty thousand, shockingly more than four hundred thousand of them werent from the battles itself. However, infections and other health issues existed all throughout the Civil War. There are a wide range of factors for every one of the passings of the deceased soldiers that had nothing to do with the fights. As one probably are aware, the innovation that was accessible amid the season of the war was not as cutting edge as the world has today where one knows fundamentally every illness along with the cures. Amid the Civil War time there was no comprehension of contaminations and little done for the counteractive action of them. Before germicides and anti-toxins, a minor injury was commonly lethal (Civil War Medicine and the Battle of Cold Harbor, a.n.d.). As clarified in time recently, a larger number of passings were created by lethal illnesses than shots albeit a few discharges led to contaminations or maladies. Reasons for these deadly illnesses were poor cleanliness in camps of the regiments, absence of proper hospitals, absence of safe housing and legitimate attire, deficiency of sustenance and water, and swarmed camps. These made a lethal blend where infections could easily build up an illness. Regardless of the possibility that there was bare comprehension of these lethal illnesses, a group called the Sanitary Commission formed in order to instruct the Union armed force on legitimate sanitation systems with an end goal to attempt to keep these passings from occurring. A few men wouldnt fret the alerts of the Commission and proceeded with the typical methods of their days in the unsanitary camps. This gathering additionally endeavored to change the methodology for harmed men so they would be more sterile and progressed than what they were. One specialist soon started prompting men in the armed force to avoid greasy sustenances and eating at customary time of day. Men did not focus on the doctors notices and continued with their eating regimens and propensities which comprised of overwhelming, greasy, salty meats, very few vegetables, and unpredictable planning and extent of nourishments or dishes at a wide range of times of day. A dreadfully substantial measure of men originated from fights practically consistently or different occasions with wounds of various sorts. The surges of injured got to be distinctly overpowering, and specialists could just stand to spend a predetermined number of profitable minutes per trooper. The greater part of soldiers, if not all, that had genuine wounds in the middle would just pass on from it. Amid the season of the Civil War, the notorious strategy of surgery known as amputation was essentia lly the last resort. It was a quick however a not extremely powerful approach to take the circumstance. Commonly, this aggravated the injury even more than it was before and it turned out to be dangerous. Numerous men trusted it to be the least demanding approach to make the harm less troublesome despite the fact that it was the most anguishing. To decrease this horrendous agony, chloroform was utilized. This fluid was connected to a material and kept over the nose of the patient until he was oblivious to diminish the torment and injury of the removal. Now and again there wasnt sufficient for each injured man that required offer assistance. The clinics would run low on provisions since there was no chance to get of getting them rapidly. This would happen on the grounds that a considerable measure of chloroform was squandered until Dr. Julian John Chisolm created an inhaler. This worked with the utilization of tubes that trickled with chloroform which acted as successfully and just u tilized one eighth of what it did some time recently. Amputation procedures In 1863, Stonewall Jacksons specialist prescribed the evacuation of his left arm, which had been gravely harmed by well disposed fire. At the point when a chloroform-doused fabric was put over his nose, the Confederate general, in incredible agony, murmured, What an infinite blessing, before going limp. (Cellania, 2012) Because of the immense number of injured at once, specialists got to be distinctly used to the strategy and were more capable at removal. Many could conduct a surgery in around 10 minutes. This was an extraordinary preferred standpoint for both sides since most regiments could just hold maybe a couple therapeutic experts within locations. Since there were numerous removals, some days specialists finished with heaps of appendages and other body parts up to 5 feet high (Medicine in the Civil War, n.d.). In the operating tent, the amputation of a very bad looking leg was witnessed. The surgeons had been laboring since the battle to save the leg, but it was impossible. The patient, a delicate looking man, was put under the influence of chloroform, and the amputation was performed with great skill by a surgeon who appeared to be quite accustomed to the use of his instruments. After the arteries were tied, the amputator scraped the end and edge of the bone until they were quite smooth. While the scraping was going on, an attendant asked: How do you feel, Thompson? Awful! was the distinct and emphatic reply. This answer was returned, although the man was far more sensible of the effects of the chloroform than he was of the amputation. (Coco,1995) In spite of the fact that officers trusted that removal was for the better of their lives, it was extremely perilous. They were correct on the grounds that removal spared a larger number of lives than whatever other techniques by transforming confused wounds into littler and more straightforward ones. Absence of water implied there was no hand washing for specialists between methods expanding the likelihood of diseases. Disregarding these odds, a sum of an expected seventy five percent of amputees recovered. Considerably higher rank fighters needed to experience an indistinguishable agony and surgeries from lower class men did. There was no sort of individual treatment for officers, corporals or other higher positions. Removal caused various passings making contaminations or simply insufferable torment, yet it was not by any means the only motivation of ailment and demise of the men in both sides of the war (Civil War Medicine and the Battle of Cold Harbor, n.d.). Wounds and diseases werent the main ones bringing on the hopeless existences of the men in regiment camps. Nature participated in taking lives (Amputations in Military Surgery, a.n.d.). Amid practice penetrates and walks, men were presented to the brutal climate amid long frosty winters or searing summers. There was no reason to not be in condition for the fight to come. The biting icy of the long winters brought about many troopers to end up distinctly wiped out. The tents they remained in were situated outside and were thin expanding the possibility of disorder among the vast gatherings of individuals in regiments. In the Union Army, for each one man executed in battle, four hundred kicked the bucket of infection and illnesses. Numerous things made deadly illnesses from materials that did not appear to be fatal all alone like microbes, for instance. Microscopic organisms can bring about contamination, malady, and affliction, all with the utilization of germs. Numerous things amid t he season of war conveyed germs. Earth was a quite unsuspected transporter alongside mosquitoes in bogs. On the off chance that an injury is not treated accurately or left untreated by and large, microorganisms and germs may enter which can prompt to discharge. This is an exceptionally unpalatable looking substance that is made in an injury when white cells fight against the germs entering. Ordinarily this could be treated with typical germicide. Earth wasnt the main thing bearing germs and illness. Some living beings additionally contained indications of destructive infections. Flying creatures, domesticated animals, and even little bugs like mosquitoes had the likelihood of being sullied. These deadly mosquitoes conveyed intestinal sickness. Jungle fever wasnt the main dangerous malady transmitted through different creatures. Known illnesses amid the season of taking up arms were measles, mumps, pneumonia, utilization, intestinal sickness, typhoo, loose bowels, the runs, yellow fe ver, scurvy, and venereal infections (King, n.d.). Without the correct medicines or solution, none of these lethal illnesses could be cured and ordinarily, even with prescription, wiped out individuals couldnt be cured. These drugs utilized on occasion did not contain the perfect measure of something or a lot of something else and the specialist or specialist would not know or have the capacity to discover. Different circumstances it simply was not sufficiently solid to battle against the illnesses. Medication amid this event was totally unique in relation to how we see it today. Things were obscure that could have spared many lives amid that time. Reports from specialists, specialists, or whatever other sort of right hand in doctors facilities demonstrated numerous setbacks because of the reason for not knowing how to treat a patient the right way. Bourbon, barony, and strychnine, were utilized as stimulants for revues and circulatory framework. For nourishing backing, meat extrica te, espresso, consolidated drain, dark tea, ferrous, mixes, were utilized as cures for iron deficiency. Solutions appeared like ordinary officer counts calories various circumstances for various medications. On account of venereal infection, calomel was utilized for mouth as salve and connected to injuries or different alternatives would be infusions of silver nitrate, zinc, or chloride of potash, otherwise called potassium chloride. Patients with intestinal sickness were treated with quinine alone with spirits of nitre and potassium iodine. For skin issues a straightforward fragrance was utilized and bromine as an alleviating operator. Chloride was put in wounds for purging or stimulants. In spite of the fact that men would shout in torment, it showed advance in the disease rates now that they were bringing down. Kidney issues were a noteworthy occasion in the war with all the slug wounds in the middle region of men furthermore shots in the stomach. These were treated with spirits of alkali, and potassium. Regardless of the possibility that officers did not have a sickness, specialists and specialists did what they could to avert them (King, n.d.). Unsanitary Sanitation At the point when an officer was gotten the camp with ordinary injuries, they were fixed with mortars with different specialists like mustard or belladonna which was then spread on material or consistent paper to be connected to the skin close by the injury. This came to show that it was so compelling to seal the injuries as opposed to leave the wounds open with the high danger of contaminations prompting to illnesses much nearly took after by death. This could happen quickly with the condition or the unpleasant camps where there was not one thing hinting at a rational soundness. Swarms of flies could be seen bugging in each settlement and doctors facility. The flies were thought to be lethal or simply unsanitary, however it was demonstrated off-base. Flies would store their eggs in open injuries of the officers or different patients. Before long the eggs developed and larvae were conceived. These hatchlings did not bring about torment but rather did in actuality clean injuries of th e troopers by eating dead or contaminated skin. The specialists soon began imagining that these hatchlings could have great advantages in averting contaminations of wounds. Rats additionally worked similarly hatchlings did by consuming the dead tissue left. Before long, many medical attendants and other individuals got to be distinctly sickened in this strategy utilized despite the fact that it was viable as a part of most cases (Bollet, 2002). Who was in charge? Surgeons, doctors, nurses, and even assistants played great roles in the Civil War. These were the people who made these procedures possible. Many lives were spared with their insight, strategies, and disclosures. Individuals in the present say that this was a time where numerous medicines and solutions were found that can and are utilized even today. Warriors were enlivened by these lifelines, as they were known for what they did. Some even accepted the open door when they could and got to be specialists or specialists themselves. Union colonel, Thomas Reynolds, was harmed in fight, which lead to having to go through amputation.. Reynolds survived removal and later turned into an educator of surgery and afterward remarked on the act of pointing the finger at specialists for performing numerous superfluous removals which individuals accepted brought on more loss of lives than there ought to have been while others concur it was ideal to endeavor of sparing lives (Bollet, 2001). Specia lists who concurred said that they spared lives and inability to perform important removal made potential outcomes of deadly disease. There was truly no other decision for the men in both sides of the armed force or the specialists themselves since removal was the main surgery accessible. In the North, over a sum of thirty thousand removals were finished with an expected same sum for the Confederates situated in the South. Real surgery was uncommon in light of the fact that disease was all the time a case trailing it. Accordingly, somewhere around 1836 and 1846, a sum of thirty nine surgical strategies were performed at the Massachusetts General Hospital. In the initial 10 years after the introduction of anesthesia, 1847 through 1857, the yearly normal was around one hundred and eighty five, of which 60% were removals. Indeed, even with innovation and medication advancing, surgery was still occasionally utilized or performed. Regardless of the possibility that surgery was important, never was the belly or mid-section of a man opened amid the system. Many of the surgeons in the Civil War had never witnessed a major amputation when they joined the regiments and very few of them had treated gunshot wounds. (Bollet, 2006) Statistics A normal of two thousand four hundred twenty seven methods was done every year at the doctors facility somewhere around 1894 and 1904, yet by 1914 this expanded to more than four thousand. Numerous Civil War specialists that partook in therapeutic techniques on men in the armed forces lived to see improvements and progressions long after the war. These individuals saw and saw the absence of arrangement for treating vast quantities of injured men that they got after fights. Numerous more lives could have been spared considering the way that there were more progressions in restorative methods before long. Around a quarter century of patients were lost altogether from not having the capacity to recuperate after their surgery. In spite of the absence of arrangement for therapeutic strategies amid the war, Union specialists treated more than four hundred thousand injured men of whom an expected two hundred forty five thousand of them were injured from firearm shots or other cannons wounds. Specialists depicted the scenes of them men pouring in as awful where bones were standing out, tissue was gone, or possibly the damage was inner and everything looked typical on the outside of the fighter. Operations were performed in no less than four hundred thousand of all harmed cases. As the war seethed on, more specialists started joining both sides of the armed forces in fight for employments. Toward the begin of the Civil War, the Union Army comprised of one hundred thirteen specialists of which twenty four were rejected and joined the Confederate Army. Throughout the war, formal and casual surgical preparing projects were created for new specialists joining either side. These specialists quickly created abilities and information that enhanced techniques. Before the end of the war, more than twelve thousand specialists had served the Union and around three thousand in the Confederacy. Considering the 66% of the entire passing number of infection or disorder, genuinely a huge sum still passed on from the fight shots discharged from both sides. An assortment of weapons were utilized amid the war, which additionally incorporated an assortment of ammo for every weapon filling various needs. A well known ammo sort was the minie all which was a round discharged from rifles and were generally moderate moving. Indeed, even little shots like that could deliver destructive harm. At the point when the body was struck at the bone the speed of the shot did not permit a perfect leave leaving expansive injuries ordinarily. Comminuted breaks were a dangerous kind of harm. This sort of damage happens when the bone is either, broken, fragmented or smashed into many pieces. Ordinarily this would happen when a shot was discharged and infiltrated joints, for example, the knee, elbow, bear, wrist, lower leg, and hip. Be that as it may, shots were likewise discharged and hit in the face zone leaving a change forever. Facial recreation additionally started amid the Civil War. It started when a private was surviving pneumonia however it decimated his face and specialists took a stab at making it look ordinary utilizing plastic surgery. The methodology helped however it didnt look 100% the same, nor was it conceivable to do as such. Today These procedures exist with much greater value and purpose to this day as there exists professions focusing on these specific jobs to be able to focus on the enhancement of the methods of practice to provide the most efficient management of work for the those in need of help. This new procedures have provided faster healing rates, greater chances of survival, decreased blood loss, and most importantly, increased life expectancy. A sum of more than 66% of the passing tally were from malady and infection which is interesting knowing the Civil War was one of the bloodiest wars in U.S. history. The lives of many overcome officers that left homes, families, dreams, and numerous more things, were relinquished keeping in mind the end goal was the attempt of setting the nation straight. These men battled with respect with the idea in their mind that they were doing it for the country, their country. They battled dauntlessly. Tragically, most of the men experienced a long and agonizing injury prompting to a demise they didnt merit. The war finished in 1865 and subjection was at long last nullified however the cost was high. Abraham Lincoln was killed days after by a man by the name of Booth, who was irritated. The Civil War was the most expensive war in American History, and it has remained an important piece of our history, with the goal that we may recollect dependably that fighting within itself, a country is set to fail. Going from wounds and ailment was an additional weight of the war that brought about noteworthy harm on the hearts, brains, and gatherings of all Americans, yet it in like manner quickened the development of arrangement and affected practices the equipped drive and surgeons still use today. While the Union emphatically had the upside of better remedial supplies and work, both sides attempted to fight disorder and improve helpful tend to their officers in the midst of the war. Tremendous quantities of Americas available day restorative accomplishments have their hidden establishments in the legacy of Americas describing war. Physics of the Ollie Skateboard Move :: physics skateboarding trick tricks
Missing figures Brief History of Skateboarding. In the beginning, skateboarding consisted of a 2x4 and some old roller-skate wheels. Around the 1950's with the boom in the surfing popularity, skateboarding became more popular. During this time it was known as sidewalk surfing. In the 1960's is when skateboarding really took off. This is when the first skateboards were produced and sold. During this time period skateboarding consisted of cruising around the streets on your board. In 1978 a 15 year old boy by the name of Alan "Ollie" Gelfand invented a trick he called the no-hands air. His friends named after him the ollie. This was a ramp based trick. In the coming years a rider by the name of Rodney Mullen took the trick and applied it to flatland skateboarding. After this point skateboarding began to evolve in to the sport it is today. Virtually every trick in the modern day skateboarding involves the ollie. When a skateboarder rolls down the street they have forces acting in the X and Y direction. The forces that I will focus on are only in the Y direction. As a skater rides down the street there are three forces acting on the skateboard. The red arrows in the image indicate the force of gravity on the mass of the skater(Mg). The black arrow represents the force of gravity on the skateboard(mg). The blue arrows are the FN or natural force of the ground pushing up on the wheels of the board. These forces have a net force of zero. Sum of forces in Y: Mg + mg - FN = 0 As the skater prepares to ollie they lower the center of gravity by bending at the knees and waist. Next the skater will begin to explode in the positive Y direction by pressing down on the tail of the board. The red arrows now have an uneven distribution to the tail of the board causing lift on the nose. All of the FN is now pushing up on the rear wheels. At this point the skater is has applied a large downward force on the tail causing the board to pop or bounce off of the ground. The downward force applied is greater than the force of gravity allowing the board to begin leaving the ground.

Greek Mythology and Greek Goddess Aphrodite Essay
The Greek Goddess Aphrodite is known as the Goddess of beauty, love, and pleasure. Aphrodite is equivalent to the Roman form Venus. She is a major goddess that was known to be youthful and the most appealing. As the god of love and affection, she has been involved in many affairs which also resulted in many children. The Goddess is believed to have been born from Ouranoââ¬â¢s damaged genital thrown into the sea by Kronos after a fight. From the damaged part, she was born and arose with a foam in the sea. According to the Greek poet Homer, she was born from the God Zeus and the Goddess Dione. Because she was beautiful, many Gods wanted her for their wife. All of them argued over her along with Zeus. The arguments over Aphrodite continued; Zeus was rejected by Aphrodite. In punishment for rejection and for the good of ending all arguments, Zeus forced her to marry Hephaestus, an ugly god of blacksmiths. She was not faithful in her relationship with the God of Blacksmiths and had affairs with other gods such as Poseidon, Hermes, Dionysos, Phaethon, and others. her most famous affair was with Ares, the god of war. Hephaestus was suspicious of her and set up a trap to catch her while she was with Ares. He chained them and dragged them to Olympus to show their shame. They did not take it seriously, resulting in the two being freed and Ares paying a fine. Aphrodite had no children with Hephaestus; her children with Poseidon are Rhodos and Herophilos. Harmonia, Deimos, Phobos, The Erotes, and Anteros was with Ares. Hermesââ¬â¢s children are Tyche, Peitho, Eunomia, and Hermaproditos. The Charites and Priapus and children of Dionysos. Children from various others are Beroe, Astynoos, Aeneas, Lyrus, Lyrus, and Meligounis. Aphrodite played a major role in causing the Trojan War. She was involved in a disagreement with Athena and Hera that resulted in the Trojan War. Aphrodite promised the Helen of Troy to Paris while she was already married to King Menelaus of Sparta. Outraged by event and abduction of his wife, the King sent his army to fight in the city of Troy. The Trojan War resulted in the destruction of Troy.

Nickââ¬â¢s View That Gatsby Essay
How far do you agree with Nickââ¬â¢s view that Gatsby is ââ¬Å"worth the whole damn bunch put togetherâ⬠? The title character of The Great Gatsby is a young man, around thirty years old, who rose from an impoverished childhood in rural North Dakota to become fabulously wealthy. Indeed, Gatsby has become famous around New York for the elaborate parties held every weekend at his mansion, ostentatious spectacles to which people long to be invited. And yet, Nick Carrawayââ¬â¢s description of the protagonist asserts that Gatsby seems curiously out of place among the ââ¬Ëwhole damn bunchââ¬â¢ which inhabit this lavish, showy world. Indeed, despite the aura of criminality surrounding his occupation, his love and loyalty to Daisy Buchanan and ultimately his capacity to dream, set him apart from the inhabitants of East Egg and West Egg. A key criticism made in Nickââ¬â¢s first person, self-aware and retrospective narration is that the ââ¬Ëwhole damn bunchââ¬â¢ entertained by Gatsby lives in extravagance. In Chapter Three, comparative adjectives and adverbs allude to the idea that the parties they attend grow ever increasingly lavish; the narrator expresses how ââ¬Ëlaughter is easierââ¬â¢, an ââ¬Ëopera of voices pitches a key higherââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëgroups change more quicklyââ¬â¢. In fact, the sheer scale of the operation required to keep them excited is emphasised by details that Nick gives, including ââ¬Ëa machine in the kitchen which could extract the juice of two hundred oranges in half an hour if a little button was pressed two hundred times by a butlerââ¬â¢s thumb.ââ¬â¢ But the ââ¬Ëvacuous bursts of laughterââ¬â¢ and the dancing ââ¬Ëin eternal graceless circlesââ¬â¢ lend a degree of artificiality to the proceedings. Indeed, the tone of the narration reveals another major shortcoming, suggesting that this outward show of opulence by the inhabitants of West Egg and East Egg is used to cover up their inner corruption and moral decay. This decadence is first exemplified by the length of festivities. Nick states that after ââ¬Ëthe first supperââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëthere would be another one after midnight.ââ¬â¢ Societyââ¬â¢s moral compass seems to invert completely, Nick ironically asserting that there were ââ¬Ëtwo deplorably sober menââ¬â¢. Being drunk appears to be proper behaviour at such a party. Moreover, Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s comical use of voice suggests that being sober is more than just frowned upon, ââ¬Ëtheir highly indignant wivesââ¬â¢ exclaiming that they ââ¬Ëhave never heard anything so selfish in my life.ââ¬â¢ But other guests contribute to this air of corruption; for example, the predatory nature of ââ¬ËYoung Englishmenââ¬â¢ selling bonds is stressed by anaphora: ââ¬Ëall well-dressed, all looking a little bit hungry, and all talking in low, earnest voices to solid and prosperous Americans.ââ¬â¢ Such obsession with money is further emphasised by musical language and assonance; they were ââ¬Ëagonizingly aware of the easy money and convinced that it was theirs for a few words in the right key.ââ¬â¢ And as time passes, such vices become ever more apparent. Increasingly ââ¬Ëwomen were now having fights with men said to be their husbandsââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ësaid to beââ¬â¢ suggesting that some may have brought mistresses rather than partners. Nick observes one man philandering with ââ¬Ëa young actressââ¬â¢, with his wife present. Her anger is humorously emphasised by simile, the narrator comparing her to ââ¬Ëan angry diamondââ¬â¢. She ââ¬Ëbroke down entirely and resorted to flank attacksââ¬â¢, reduced to hissing into his ear, ââ¬ËYou promised!ââ¬â¢ By the end, the function had turned into ââ¬Ëviolent confusionââ¬â¢. Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s use of characterisation also emphasises the flaws of those immediately around Gatsby, Tom Buchanan in particular. Tom is Daisyââ¬â¢s husband, an extremely wealthy man, a brute, and an athlete. And his vices become apparent from the beginning of the book. His ignorance is brought out when he praises the ridiculous notions of ââ¬ËThe Rise of the Coloured Empiresââ¬â¢ that ââ¬Ëthe white raceââ¬â¢, which is ââ¬Ëthe dominant raceââ¬â¢ has to ââ¬Ëwatch out or other races will have control of things.ââ¬â¢ The way he refers to it as ââ¬Ëscience and art, and all thatââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëscientific stuffââ¬â¢ only undermines his racist viewpoints even further. But more importantly, Tom is deeply immoral, Jordan Baker informing the narrator that ââ¬ËTomââ¬â¢s got some woman in New Yorkââ¬â¢. Nick is so incensed by Tomââ¬â¢s affair that his ââ¬Ëown instinct was to telephone immediately for the policeââ¬â¢. In fact, only a few months after their wedding, he appears to have had a fling with ââ¬Ëone of the chambermaids in the Santa Barbara Hotelââ¬â¢. This series of affairs must have caused his wife some emotional damage. He does not even turn up to the birth of their daughter, Daisy casually informing Nick that ââ¬ËTom was God knows where.ââ¬â¢ In this way, Tom is neither attentive nor sensitive towards Daisy, especially in contrast with Gatsby. But Tom is not just unscrupulous but abusive. When Nick meets him in Chapter One, he asserts that he had ââ¬Ëa cruel bodyââ¬â¢ which was ââ¬Ëalways leaning aggressively forward.ââ¬â¢ And though Carraway never sees him being violent with his wife, there are hints of his unbridled physicality when Daisy reveals a bruise on her finger that, although accidental, was caused by that ââ¬Ëbrute of a manââ¬â¢. She says ââ¬Ëaccusinglyââ¬â¢ that ââ¬Ëyou did it, Tomââ¬â¢. But the brutal streak really comes across when Tom is with his mistress. ââ¬ËWith a short, deft movementââ¬â¢ he ââ¬Ëbroke her nose with his open hand.ââ¬â¢ But the title character too has his flaws. Like ââ¬Ëthe whole damn bunchââ¬â¢, Gatsby lives extravagantly, replacing a guestââ¬â¢s damaged dress with one costing ââ¬Ëtwo hundred and sixty-five dollarsââ¬â¢. And like ââ¬Ëthe whole damn bunchââ¬â¢, he has made unethical choices, in his case in acquiring his fortune. Speculation among his guests first alludes to such decisions, Fitzgerald using the method of choric voices. Although various theories that ââ¬Ëhe killed a man onceââ¬â¢ or that ââ¬Ëhe was a German spy during the warââ¬â¢ may appear unrealistic, later speculation, from Tom Buchanan in particular, does start to blemish Nickââ¬â¢s idealised conception of Gatsby. When they first meet, Tom presumes that Gatsby is ââ¬Ësome big bootleggerââ¬â¢. This assumption may not be wrong, the antagonist discovering that Gatsby ââ¬Ëand Wolfshiem bought up a lot of side-street drug-stores here and in Chicago and sold grain alcohol over the counterââ¬â¢. In this way, though Nick never quite finds out what Gatsby did for a living, his greatest vice appears to be the source of his income. But while Tomââ¬â¢s report would never be objective, Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s characterisation of Wolfsheim also hints at the aura of criminality surrounding Gatsby. The authorââ¬â¢s use of voice emphasises the gamblerââ¬â¢s sleaze, pronouncing ââ¬Ëconnectionââ¬â¢ as ââ¬Ëgonnegtionââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËOxfordââ¬â¢ as ââ¬ËOggsfordââ¬â¢. But he also appears sinister, wearing ââ¬Ëcuffââ¬â¢ buttons made of ââ¬Ëhuman molarsââ¬â¢. Wolfsheimââ¬â¢s criminality is confirmed when Gatsby informs Nick that ââ¬Ëheââ¬â¢s the man who fixed the Worldââ¬â¢s Series back in 1919.ââ¬â¢ But the gambler may be involved in more dangerous activities than simply fixing baseball matches. Wolfsheimââ¬â¢s own dialogue suggests that he has experience in activities where men end up dead, explaining to Nick that ââ¬Ëwhen a man gets killed I never like to get mixed up in it in any way. I keep out.ââ¬â¢ The mysterious phone calls which Gatsby receives in no way vindicate him either. His reunion with Daisy is interrupted by one such call, the use of ellipses adding a sense of secrecy to his subsequent conversation: ââ¬ËYes â⬠¦ Well, I canââ¬â¢t talk now â⬠¦ I canââ¬â¢t talk now, old sport â⬠¦ I said a small town â⬠¦Ã¢â¬â¢ The confidential nature of the suggested business dealing may imply that Gatsbyââ¬â¢s work is not legitimate. In fact, only after Gatsbyââ¬â¢s death does he find out what would be said on the other end of the line. When Nick is mistaken for the title character, ââ¬ËSlagleââ¬â¢ rapidly explains that ââ¬ËYoung Parkeââ¬â¢s in troubleââ¬â¢ and that ââ¬Ëthey picked him up when he handed the bonds over the counter.ââ¬â¢ Words such as ââ¬Ëtroubleââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëpicked him upââ¬â¢ suggest that one of Gatsbyââ¬â¢s subordinates may have landed himself on the wrong side of the law. Furthermore, the ââ¬Ëfrightenedââ¬â¢ nature of Gatsbyââ¬â¢s so-called ââ¬Ëfriendââ¬â¢ Klipspringer again alludes to the criminality of Gatsbyââ¬â¢s business acquaintances. Over the telephone, Klipspringer even ââ¬Ëdemanded to know who I was before he would give his name.ââ¬â¢ For such reasons, when Wolfsheim recalls how close he and Gatsby were, ââ¬Ëthick like that in everythingââ¬â¢, the narrator ââ¬Ëwondered if this partnership had included the Worldââ¬â¢s Series transaction in 1919.ââ¬â¢ Such implications about the way Gatsby has accrued his fortune also expose his deceit. In fact, early in the plot the title character lies to Carraway by saying that his wealth was inherited, that he is ââ¬Ëthe son of some wealthy people in the Middle West ââ¬â all dead now.ââ¬â¢ He also states that he was ââ¬Ëbrought up in America but educated at Oxford, because all my ancestors have been educated there for many years.ââ¬â¢ In reality Gatsby rose from an impoverished childhood in rural North Dakota. His dishonesty is closely linked to his lack of authenticity. Indeed, Nick notices the manufactured aspects of his personality, put on to promote the image of the ââ¬ËOxfordââ¬â¢ man which he claims to be. The writerââ¬â¢s use of voice underlines his slightly forced characteristics. These include his affected accent ââ¬â ââ¬Ëan elaborate formality of speechââ¬â¢ which ââ¬Ëjust missed being absurdââ¬â¢ and his habit of calling people ââ¬Ëold sportââ¬â¢. Moreover, Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s use of scene and place, his library specifically, alludes to the idea that he is not genuine. Owl-Eyes, one of his invited guests, is surprised that the millionaireââ¬â¢s books are ââ¬Ëabsolutely real ââ¬â have pages and everythingââ¬â¢, rather than being made out of ââ¬Ënice durable cardboard.ââ¬â¢ This reaction implies a belief that so much about him is fake. Even when he realises its authenticity, Owl-Eyes compares him to ââ¬Ëa regular Belascoââ¬â¢, a Broadway producer known for the realism of his sets. Thus, though he is putting on act, this theatrical persona which he has mastered is still a very convincing act. Indeed, The novelââ¬â¢s title itself ââ¬â ââ¬ËThe Great Gatsbyââ¬â¢ ââ¬â is suggestive of the sort of vaudeville billing for a performer or magician like ââ¬ËThe Great Houdiniââ¬â¢, again subtly emphasising the showy and perhaps illusory quality of Gatsbyââ¬â¢s life. But despite both the nature of his work and this theatrical quality, Nick still suggests that Gatsby does not share the same level of moral decadence as the ââ¬Ëwhole damn bunchââ¬â¢ in his circle. Chapter Three serves to separate his personality from that of his guests. Anaphora underlines how he remains an outsider at his own function, Nick asserting that ââ¬Ëno one swooned backward on Gatsby, and no French bob touched Gatsbyââ¬â¢s shoulder, and no singing quartets were formed with Gatsbyââ¬â¢s head for one link.ââ¬â¢ Antithesis also contrasts Gatsby from the company he entertains; while ââ¬Ëno one swooned backward on Gatsbyââ¬â¢, girls were ââ¬Ëswooning backward playfully into menââ¬â¢s armsââ¬â¢ Indeed, unlike the decadents he entertains, ââ¬Ëhe grew more correct as fraternal hilarity increasedââ¬â¢. Gatsbyââ¬â¢s acquaintances also reveal his merits. Meyer Wolfsheim stresses the basic nobility which defines his character, telling Carraway that he is ââ¬Ëa man of fine breedingââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëthe kind of man youââ¬â¢d like to take home and introduce to your mother and sister.ââ¬â¢ Moreover, before the funeral, Gatsbyââ¬â¢s father also underlines his sonââ¬â¢s good nature by stating that ââ¬Ëever since he made a success he was very generous with meââ¬â¢. But he also reveals Gatsbyââ¬â¢s great ambition and desire for self-improvement. Mr Gatz tells Nick that ââ¬ËJimmy was bound to get ahead. He always had some resolves like this or somethingââ¬â¢ and that he placed great emphasis on ââ¬Ëimproving his mindââ¬â¢. Indeed, the ââ¬Ëscheduleââ¬â¢ ââ¬â including activities such as ââ¬Ëdumbell exercise and wall-scalingââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëstudy electricityââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëpractise elocution, poise and how to attain itââ¬Ë and ââ¬Ëstudy n eeded inventionsââ¬â¢ ââ¬â which he made ââ¬Ëwhen he was a boyââ¬â¢ reveals that even before he knew what he wanted to be, Gatsby always desired to make something of himself. Furthermore, Chapter Five serves to explain that his method of acquiring millions of dollars, his lavish weekly parties and lifestyle and his manufactured persona are all merely means to a more worthy end. This end is winning back Daisy Buchanan. Indeed, in contrast with Tomââ¬â¢s cruel and unthoughtful treatment of his wife, Nick characterises Gatsby most of all with the admirable qualities of love for and loyalty to her. The title characterââ¬â¢s speech alludes to his attempts to ensure that the reunion is perfect, the man asking Nick whether he has ââ¬Ëgot everything you needââ¬â¢. He specifically checks the dayââ¬â¢s forecast in the hope that sunshine will emerge during the reunion, informing Nick that ââ¬Ëthey thought the rain would stop about four.ââ¬â¢ The writer also uses scenes and places to enhance Gatsbyââ¬â¢s need for perfection. For example, the reunion takes place at Nickââ¬â¢s house, perhaps reflecting how Gatsby wanted to meet the love of his life in a more secluded and romantic environment than his gaudy mansion. But Gatsby may also have organised the reunion at Nickââ¬â¢s house to impress Daisy, to give her a view of his ââ¬Ëhuge placeââ¬â¢. He himself proclaims that his ââ¬Ëhouse looks wellââ¬â¢. However, the use of a first-person, self-conscious and retrospective narrator emphasises his efforts most of all. Gatsby almost redecorates Nickââ¬â¢s place, not only sending a man ââ¬Ëover to cut my grassââ¬â¢ ââ¬â to make sure the lawn outside was smart ââ¬â but also adorning the interior with flowers, ââ¬Ëwith innumerable receptaclesââ¬â¢. Hyperbole emphasises the extent of this renovation, as if a whole ââ¬Ëgreenhouse arrived.ââ¬â¢ Further in the chapter, the author underlines the intensity of his love by presenting Nickââ¬â¢s speculation about Gatsbyââ¬â¢s intentions as Gatsbyââ¬â¢s actual thoughts. When Daisy goes from Nickââ¬â¢s place to her loverââ¬â¢s, Nick states: ââ¬ËI think he revalued everything in his house according to the measure of response it drew from her well-loved eyesââ¬â¢, as if everything he has ever bought or owned has been simply to please her. Moreover, Gatsbyââ¬â¢s decision to take the blame for Daisy over the death of Myrtle Wilson ââ¬â telling Nick that ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢ll say I wasââ¬â¢ driving ââ¬â demonstrates the deep love he still feels for her and illustrates the basic nobility that defines his character. The image of a pitiable Gatsby keeping watch outside her house while she and Tom sit comfortably within is an indelible image that allows the reader to look past Gatsbyââ¬â¢s criminality. Indeed, the fact that he wants ââ¬Ëto wait here till Daisy goes to bedââ¬â¢, to protect her even after it appears that Daisy is not going to leave Tom, is a final testament to his undying love for her. Nick leaves Gatsby to watch over Daisy, as if his ââ¬Ëpresence marred the sacredness of the vigilââ¬â¢, the last statement suggesting that his devotion has moved to the extremes of religious worship. And yet, Nickââ¬â¢s final criticism of Gatsby questions the realism of such deep and uncompromising devotion. The parallels between his love for Daisy and religious worship ââ¬â the title character ââ¬Ëconsumed with wonder at her presenceââ¬â¢ ââ¬â suggest that Gatsby, a man who stakes everything on his ââ¬Ëdreamsââ¬â¢, now appears to have dreamed too big. Even at the beginning of their reunion, Nick recognises the unrealistic nature of his ââ¬Ëdreamââ¬â¢. The way Fitzgerald presents Nickââ¬â¢s speculation about Gatsbyââ¬â¢s intentions as Gatsbyââ¬â¢s actual thoughts helps demonstrate that ââ¬Ëthere must have been moments even that afternoon when Daisy tumbled short of his dreamsââ¬â¢. Although Daisy possesses a number of virtues, although it is ââ¬Ënot her own faultââ¬â¢, even she cannot match Gatsbyââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ëdreamââ¬â¢. The narrator suggests that his ââ¬Ëdreamââ¬â¢ was so alive, that ââ¬Ëhis illusionââ¬â¢ had such a ââ¬Ëcolossal vitalityââ¬â¢, that ââ¬Ëit had gone beyond her, beyond everything.ââ¬â¢ The repetition of ââ¬Ëbeyondââ¬â¢ emphasises that she cannot live up to Gatsbyââ¬â¢s idealised expectations. The authorââ¬â¢s use of poetic prose further emphasises how much the man has romanticized her. Indeed, metaphor likens Gatsby to an artist who decks his image ââ¬Ëwith every bright feather that drifted his wayââ¬â¢, with every possible virtue. The alliteration of ââ¬Ëfââ¬â¢ in the narration emphasises how permanent this idealised image has become, Nick asserting that ââ¬Ëno amount of fire or freshness can challenge itââ¬â¢. Indeed, he expects too much, wanting ââ¬Ënothing less of Daisy than that she should go to Tom and say: ââ¬ËI never loved you.ââ¬â¢ Tragically such expectations lead Daisy to change her mind, breaking down under his own pressure in Chapter Seven, exclaiming to Gatsby that ââ¬Ëyou want too much!ââ¬â¢ But in Chapter Eight, Nick goes a step further, suggesting that Daisy, the object of his ââ¬Ëdreamââ¬â¢ is unworthy of his power of dreaming. Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s use of time and sequence, the narrative switching to Gatsbyââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ëstory of his youthââ¬â¢, emphasises the influence of Daisyââ¬â¢s wealth and privilege on Gatsby. The narrator states that ââ¬Ëher porch was bright with the bought luxury of star-shineââ¬â¢, and that she ââ¬Ëvanished into her rich house, into her rich, full lifeââ¬â¢, the repetition of ââ¬Ërichââ¬â¢ reflecting the aura of affluence which Gatsby is drawn to. Indeed, it becomes clear that Gatsby idolises both wealth and Daisy, the title character almost quantifying her, the fact that many men already loved Daisy increasing ââ¬Ëher value in his eyesââ¬â¢. Indeed, his attraction to Daisy may be caused in part because of what she represents, the exclusive upper class which he aspires to be a part of. Daisy thus appears almost shallow and fickle, and because she is the focus of Gatsbyââ¬â¢s life, his dream is simply reduced to a motivation for material gain. After Gatsbyââ¬â¢s death, Nick writes that Gatsby must have realized ââ¬Å"what a grotesque thing a rose is.â⬠The rose has been a conventional symbol of beauty. Nick suggests that roses arenââ¬â¢t inherently beautiful, and that people only view them that way because they choose to do so. Daisy is ââ¬Å"grotesqueâ⬠in the same way: Gatsby has invested her with beauty and meaning by making her the object of his dream. Had Gatsby not imbued her with such value, Daisy would be simply an idle, bored, rich young woman with no particular moral strength or loyalty. But this capacity to ââ¬Ëdreamââ¬â¢, this ceaseless effort to recreate the past, reflects the vitality and optimism which Nick most respects about Gatsby. The active narrator first notices this quality when they meet in Chapter Three. Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s use of first person, self-aware and narration reveals Gatsbyââ¬â¢s rare ability to make anyone he smiles at feel as though he has chosen that person out of ââ¬Ëthe whole external worldââ¬â¢; it reflects that personââ¬â¢s most optimistic conception of him or herself. His smile ââ¬Ëbelieved in you as you would like to believe in yourselfââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëassured you that it had precisely the impression of you that, at your best, you hoped to convey.ââ¬â¢ And because of such ability to hope, when Gatsby waves goodbye to his guests, Nick emphasises the contrast between the immorality of his work and the virtue of his motivation. While ââ¬Ëthey guessed at his corruptionââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëhe had stood on those st eps, concealing his incorruptible dreamââ¬â¢. Nick alludes to such undying hope in the last lines of the novel, the narrator strolling along Gatbsyââ¬â¢s lawn one final time, just as the title character had done when Nick first sees him in Chapter One. And as he sprawls out on the beach behind Gatsbyââ¬â¢s house, he muses that Gatsby had failed to realize that even before his reunion with Daisy, his dream had already ended, ââ¬Ëthat it was already behind himââ¬â¢, and that his goals had become hollow and empty. But though this dream had ââ¬Ëeluded us thenââ¬â¢, Nick envisions that people everywhere are motivated by similar dreams and that ââ¬Ëtomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms furtherââ¬â¢. In this way, though there is an ambiguity over whether men such as Gatsby will ever reach their ââ¬Ëdreamââ¬â¢ ââ¬â Fitzgerald leaving the phrase, ââ¬Ëand one fine morning -ââ¬â¢, open-ended ââ¬â Nick Carraway recognises that the importance lies not in reaching the ââ¬Ëdreamââ¬â ¢ but in refusing to lose heart. In the same way, Gatsbyââ¬â¢s own audacity and nobility of spirit to dream of creating a radically different future for himself, to dream of a life with Daisy, never let up. This is why one can agree with Nickââ¬â¢s viewpoint to a great extent. Even though his dream ends in failure ââ¬â because his methods are criminal, because he can never gain acceptance into the American aristocracy, and because his new identity is largely a theatrical act ââ¬â his deep-rooted ambition, his loyalty to Daisy and, uniting the two together, the strength of his capacity to dream, are what set him above the members of West Egg and East Egg. Gatsby is a visionary. This is why he is ââ¬Å"worth the whole damn bunch put togetherâ⬠.
